What is a root ball tree?

A root ball tree is a tree that has grown into the ground in a production nursery. Unlike potted trees, that should be repotted regularly during their growth, the root ball trees stay in the field until harvest time. With specialized equipment, we remove the tree, its roots and its soil and cover them up in burlap or a spindle basket.

This is how the mature tree is sent to garden centers, and then sold to customers that can then plant it right away in their chosen spot.

How to plant a root ball tree

If you opt for a root ball tree, you first need to dig a hole the same depth as the root ball, and two to three times its size. You then need to add a dose of mycorrhizae to promote good take-up and optimal root establishment. To know all the steps to planting a tree, read our complete article on it.

If your root ball is held in place by burlap, you can cut off only the bottom part and leave the burlap on top. The soil will decompose the material over time. If your tree is in a wire basket, take great care not to cut the roots by removing the metal wires that hold the soil and roots together.
