Fancy a change of scenery? Create a new flowerbed!

Summer is just around the corner, the magnolias, tulips and lilacs are in bloom… or almost. It’s beautiful! Looking for something new this season? Why not create a new flowerbed? You’ll bring colour and life to your home and let’s face it: you can never have too many flowers. Plus, it’s pretty easy to do. Here’s how:

  1. Planning
This is an important, if not crucial, step in establishing a new flowerbed. Make a plan for your landscape. Choose a location, draw its shape and size and choose the plants you would like to put in it: shrubs, perennials, annual flowers… why not some vegetable and herbs?
  2. Preparing
The better the quality of your soil, the better your flowerbed will be. Remove the grass or ground cover in the area where you want to establish your landscape, and add a good layer of quality planting soil. Amend your soil to provide all the nutrients the plants will need for healthy growth: compost, fertilizer, etc. If you want to reduce weed growth, you can place a geotextile fabric on the bottom of your planting bed. Ask our experts in store for advice, they will be able to direct you towards the right solution for your needs.
  3. Shopping
Let’s be honest, this is where the fun really begins! Browse the aisles of your favorite garden centre to find THE plant you’ve been dreaming of. But be careful! Of course, you can listen to your heart and its desires, but it is essential to choose your plants according to the amount of sunlight your yard has if you want to obtain good results. You must also choose your plants according to your lifestyle. Some types of plants require more attention than others, more fertilizer, more water. Choose plants that suit you. Remember that plants will also grow over time. Give them room to grow to their full potential.
  4. Creating
It is now time to plant your plants. Remember to add a rooting fertilizer or mycorrhizae at the bottom of your planting pit for a better recovery. Keep the soil moist, especially for the first few days. Mulch is a good option to limit watering, it helps to conserve moisture in addition to slowing down the growth of weeds, a great advantage!

Now all you have to do is enjoy the show that nature offers you. The best part is that if you don’t like an element, you can move it at the end of the season or next spring.

A small suggestion to make your job easier: remove dead flowers and wilted leaves throughout the season, the chore will seem less arduous. Also, water deeply, as it is more effective for the plants. You can even get a small drip irrigation system to do the job for you.

Enjoy the summer by admiring the fruits of your labour!

Have a great gardening season
