Originally from Japan, it has a slightly more bitter taste than regular bitter melon. Rare to find, its pearly white skin has medicinal properties to regulate blood sugar and prevent diabetes. A staple food in Okinawa, Japan, where it is said to contribute to the longevity of its population. Fruits average 8 to 10 inches long. They are often added to soups or grated and eaten raw.
Companion plants: Beans, radishes, squash, peas.
Away from: Potato, aromatic herbs, cucumber.
Sowing: Sow seeds indoors 3 to 4 weeks. before the last frost.
Harvest: Harvest them when they are 8-10″ long, before they start to turn yellow.
