Natural, Untreated and Non-GMO Seeds
This early heirloom variety of cabbage is native to the Dithmarschen region of Germany off the North Sea. With its good taste, Dithmarschen cabbage lends itself easily to various dishes and is often used in contemporary international cuisine. It is suitable for the fresh market.
Fertilize 2 weeks after transplanting with a balanced fertilizer. Three weeks later, add a fertilizer rich in nitrogen; cabbage needs nitrogen in the early stages.
For a fall harvest, direct sow seeds outdoors (or transplant plants) in mid to late summer. Make sure the young plants do not dry out in the heat of the summer sun.
When the seedlings reach about 5 inches tall, thin to allow the desired space between them. If desired, transplant the thinned seedlings elsewhere.
To monitor:
Grow young plants under insect exclusion netting to protect against cabbage maggot and flea beetles; Cabbage flies will also be deterred using “cabbage collars” – discs that protect the soil at the base of the plant. Create barriers and traps around plants to control slugs and snails. Nets stretched over supports will keep hungry pigeons away. Mulch heavily around the area to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. Practice crop rotation with cabbages to avoid an accumulation of soil-borne diseases.
