Description

Dahlia flower (Dahlia spp.) , offered by the seed company Weston Seeds

Dahlias are a tender perennial, prized for their spectacular flowers and wide range of colours and forms. Winter hardy only in certain zones, they can be grown as annuals in cooler climates or their tubers can be dug up and stored for the following season. These versatile flowers are equally at home in beds or borders, bringing a touch of elegance and vitality to any garden.

Height: 24 to 60 inches (depending on variety)
Plant spacing: 18-24 inches
Exposure: Full sun
Sowing: Indoor/direct sowing (or tubers)

Cultivation method:

In cool climates, start dahlias indoors 4 to 6 weeks before the last frost date. Fill 1- or 2-gallon pots with a lightly moistened potting mix. Plant the tubers with the stem or shoots facing upward and cover them with 2 inches (5 cm.) of soil. Place the pots in a warm, bright location, watering sparingly until active growth begins.

Once all danger of frost has passed, transplant dahlias outdoors into fertile, well-drained soil. Plant tubers or young plants 4-6 inches (10-15 cm) deep and space them 18-24 inches (45-60 cm) apart. Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture, but avoid overwatering to prevent rot.
