Originally from Japan, it has a slightly more bitter taste than regular bitter melon. Rare to find, its pearly white skin has medicinal properties to regulate blood sugar and prevent diabetes. A staple food in Okinawa, Japan, where it is said to contribute to the longevity of its population. Fruits average 8 to 10 inches long. They are often added to soups or grated and eaten raw.
