Lettuce is a sun-loving cool weather crop that grows best in well-drained organic soil. Sow seeds as soon as the soil can be worked in spring, then every two weeks thereafter to ensure a continuous supply. Sow approximately 3 mm (1/8 in) deep in rows 45 cm (18 in) apart. A regular supply of moisture throughout the growing period is imperative for success.
Harvest leaf lettuce by pulling out the whole plant or cutting the leaves off the main stem at least 1 inch (2.5 cm) above the base – this will allow the plant to grow new leaves. Harvest head lettuce by cutting the head off at the base, just below the lower leaves.
