Hale's Best Cantaloupe: Sweet Flesh and Generous Yields

Hale's Best Cantaloupe (Cucumis melo), offered by OSC Seeds

The 'Hale's Best' cantaloupe is an open-pollinated heirloom variety introduced in the 1920s. It produces large, sweet melons weighing up to 1.8 kg with bright salmon flesh, firm texture, and excellent flavor. Its yellow-green netted rind is rib-free, making it ideal for both market growers and home gardeners. Best grown in soils with a pH between 6.5 and 7.5 for optimal quality and sweetness.

Spread: 1.5 to 2 m between hills
Plant height: Trailing plant
Packet size: Approx. 60 seeds
Companion plants: Corn, beans, nasturtiums
Incompatible plants: Potatoes, cucumbers

How to Grow:

Choose a sunny, wind-protected site. Sow 5 seeds 2.5 cm deep per hill, spacing hills 1.5 to 2 m apart. Thin to 3 or 4 plants per hill. In short-season regions, start seeds indoors in peat pots 4 weeks before transplanting. Ensure soil temperatures are above 21°C for successful germination in 10 to 14 days. Keep melon vines evenly watered throughout the growing season to support vigorous growth and abundant harvests.

The 'Hale's Best' cantaloupe is a versatile choice, offering sweet, flavorful melons perfect for markets and home gardens alike.
