Are you looking to add perennials and new shrubs to your landscape, or grow a larger vegetable garden so you can enjoy delicious homegrown veggies this summer? It’s easy! Just follow these steps to properly prepare your planting area so your plants can establish themselves successfully.
Step 1 – Define the area
Choose a spot to establish your new planting area. Your choice will impact the plants you grow, so be sure to consider their light requirements. Once you’ve made your final decision, outline the perimeter of your flower bed with a sharp shovel. You may also add a border of your choice, such as plastic, metal, wood, stone, or other.
Step 2 – Remove grass and rocks
When your space is defined, remove the grass or any other surface plants. Dispose of them in green waste or compost. Large rocks might be hidden beneath the surface, so it’s best to remove them as well to leave only the soil.
Step 3 – Loosen the soil
You don’t need a rototiller to loosen the soil on the surface. Use a fork or a spade to break up the soil, making it more airy and ready for new plants.
Step 4 – Plant !
Depending on the plants you’ve chosen, dig holes of the appropriate width and depth for your new plants. Make sure to space them properly, in order to accommodate their growth over time. To encourage root development, add mycorrhizae and rub them well onto the root ball to ensure they adhere properly.
Step 5 – Amend the soil
Once your plants are positioned, add 2 cm of compost to the surface to nourish the soil and the plants. You can add this same amount of compost annually. You can also mix the compost to the first 15 cm of soil before planting.
Step 6 – Mulch
To control weed growth, maintain a good moisture level, and prevent temperature fluctuations, add mulch of your choice around your plants. Though not mandatory, this step will benefit your plants development and reduce their maintenance. For a vegetable garden, straw is your best choice.
