Hardy and Elegant: White Yarrow
White Yarrow (Achillea millefolium), offered by OSC Seeds
White Yarrow is a versatile, drought-tolerant perennial originally from Europe, now naturalized in Canada. Its flat-topped white flowers bloom throughout summer, brightening borders, rock gardens, and sunny, challenging areas. The fern-like, aromatic foliage adds texture, and its spreading rhizomes create dense, attractive ground cover.
Spread: Up to 60 cm
Plant Height: 45 cm
Packet Size: Approximately 200 seeds
Companion Plants: Lavender, thyme, black-eyed Susan
Enemy Plants: None known
How to Grow:
Start seeds indoors in soilless mix from mid-February to mid-March. Do not cover seeds, as they require light to germinate. Maintain a temperature of 20°C for 7 to 15 days. Once seedlings emerge, place them under grow lights, then harden them off before transplanting to a sunny spot in the garden. Alternatively, direct sow seeds outdoors in early spring or late summer.
This hardy perennial, suitable for zone 3 and up, is low-maintenance and perfect for naturalistic gardens. Its blooms are also excellent for long-lasting cut flower arrangements.
