Once the seedlings have emerged, thin to keep only 2 or 3 plants per mound. This squash requires warm, fertile, well-drained soil, as well as full sun exposure. Water regularly and mulch to maintain moisture and limit weeds. In cool regions, protect young plants with cloches or tunnels. Harvest the fruits when the rind is hard and before the first frost, to fully enjoy their taste and long storage life.
