Hot pepper 'Cayenne' (Capsicum annuum) – proposed by the Seed Company WH Perron
The 'Cayenne' hot pepper is a chili type variety, known for its compact, trailing growth habit, perfect for pots and hanging baskets. This pepper tolerates cooler temperatures well and produces an abundance of mildly hot fruits, surrounded by dense foliage that protects them from the elements. Ideal for spicy dishes, it can be harvested green for a milder flavor or ripened to a vibrant red or yellow hue.
Spread : 30 to 40 cm
Plant height : 50 to 60 cm
Quantity per packet : 20 seeds
Companion plants : Basil, carrot, marjoram, onion, oregano
Enemy plants : Kohlrabi, chives, fennel, okra, tomato
Cultivation method:
For best results, start 'Cayenne' hot pepper seedlings indoors as early as March, using a light, well-drained potting mix. Maintain a temperature of 68 to 75 degrees F (20 to 24 degrees C) for rapid germination. Once the seedlings have two pairs of true leaves, transplant them into individual pots.
Transplant seedlings outdoors after the last frost, when night temperatures are above 54-55°F (12-13°C). Choose a location in full sun and plant them 12 inches (30 cm) apart in rows 24 inches (60 cm) apart. If the seedlings are taller than 24 inches (60 cm), stake them to support them.
Water regularly and fertilize once a month with a potassium-rich fertilizer to promote abundant blooms and generous harvests. Harvest green fruits for immediate use or wait until fully ripe for a more intense flavor and vibrant colors.
The hot pepper 'Cayenne' is an essential option for lovers of spicy flavors and for gardeners looking for an easy and prolific crop, whether in the ground or in pots.
