Bunching onion (Allium fistulosum) – offered by Seed Company WH Perron
Bunching onions are a productive and easy-to-grow variety, perfect for gardeners looking for a summer or fall harvest. Known for their upright growth habit and dark green foliage, these onions do not form bulbs, but offer long, white stalks with a mild, subtle flavor. Ideal for salads and fresh dishes, they are a great addition to any vegetable garden.
Spread : 10 to 15 cm
Plant height : 30 to 45 cm
Quantity per packet : 100 seeds
Companion plants : Carrot, beetroot, celery, cabbage, strawberry, lettuce, parsnip, pepper
Enemy plants : Bean, pea, sage, turnip
Cultivation method:
Sow bunching onion seeds directly in the garden in early spring or in July-August for a fall harvest. Plant seeds 1 cm deep in fertile, well-drained soil. Space rows 15 cm apart for optimal development.
During growth, lightly hill the plants by mounding the soil around the stems to obtain white and elongated stems. Water regularly to maintain constant humidity without excess, which will promote healthy and rapid growth.
Harvest onions when they reach their desired size, usually after 60 to 80 days. These onions have tender, flavorful stems and are perfect for adding to your fresh dishes all season long.
