Cultivation method:
Start seedlings indoors in February in a soilless medium, then transplant seedlings outdoors in spring. For direct sowing, plant seeds from mid-April, 8 to 15 mm (1/4 to 1/2") deep and space them 15 mm (1/2") apart in rows 30 cm (12") apart.
Once seedlings have emerged, thin them to 5cm (3") for small cooking onions or 7.5cm (3") for larger bulbs. Onions grow best in fertile, well-drained soil and a sunny location. If flower stalks appear, bend them back to redirect energy into bulb formation.
