Lettuce is a cool season crop that thrives in sun and well-drained organic soil. Sow seeds as soon as the soil is ready to work in spring, then repeat every two weeks for a continuous harvest. Plant 1/8" (3 mm) deep in rows 18" (45 cm) apart.
Regular watering is essential for optimal growth. To harvest, you can either remove the entire plant or cut the leaves 1" (2.5cm) above the base to allow new leaves to grow. For head lettuces, cut the head at the base just below the lower leaves.
