Cultivation method
'Butternut Violin' squash thrives in warm climates and requires rich, deep, well-drained soil with a pH of 5.5 to 6.5 . Amend the soil with compost before planting to encourage vigorous growth.
Sow directly into the ground from late May to mid-June , 1 inch (2.5 cm) deep. Form hills 8 feet (2.4 m) apart and sow 4 to 6 seeds per hill . Once germinated, thin to 3 plants per hill .
For indoor starting , start seedlings 3 weeks before the last frost . Use biodegradable pots to avoid disturbing the roots when transplanting.
