Scarole 'Superfiorentina' (Cichorium endivia), offered by the seed company Weston Seeds
Scarole 'Superfiorentina' is a popular heirloom variety, forming a large, compact head with tender, light-coloured leaves. Weather-resistant, it is ideal for autumn growing, offering a mild, slightly crunchy flavour, perfect for salads or cooked dishes.
Days to maturity : 40 to 70 days
Height : 6 to 8 inches
Spacing : 6 to 8 inches
Sowing : Indoor or direct sowing, spring, summer or fall
Exposure : Full sun
Quantity per pack : untreated seeds
Cultivation method:
Sow directly outdoors in June, 6mm (1/4") deep in rows 60cm (24") apart. Once the plants have emerged, thin them to 20cm (8") to allow them to form well-developed heads.
For more tender, less bitter leaves, bundle the inner leaves together, tying the larger outer leaves to the center 7-10 days before harvest. Make sure the outer leaves are dry to prevent mold. Maintain regular watering to promote uniform growth.
