Head lettuce 'Signorinella' (Lactuca sativa), offered by the seed company Weston Seeds

'Signorinella' lettuce is a prized heirloom variety since the late 1800s. Prized for its firm heads, crisp texture and ability to stay fresh, it produces medium-sized green heads with fringed, slightly ruffled outer leaves. Ideal for cool climates, this lettuce is perfect for extended harvest throughout spring and summer.

Cultivation method:

Sow seeds directly into the open ground as soon as the soil can be worked in spring. Sow 3 mm (1/8") deep in rows 45 cm (18") apart. For a continuous supply, repeat sowing every two weeks. Lettuce prefers rich, well-drained soil with a constant supply of moisture.

Harvest head lettuces by cutting the heads at the base, just below the lower leaves. For leafy varieties, cut about 1" (2.5 cm) above the base to allow for new growth. Be sure to protect the plants from high temperatures, which can cause bolting.

A lettuce for lovers of authentic flavors!

With its ancient history and exceptional taste, 'Signorinella' lettuce will bring a touch of tradition and freshness to your garden and your table. A variety that deserves a place in every vegetable garden!
