Cultivation method:
Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost, in a light, well-drained potting soil. Maintain a constant temperature of 72-80°F (22-26°C) for rapid germination, usually in 7-14 days. Plant out seedlings when they are 2 inches (5cm) tall.
When all danger of frost has passed, transplant them into the ground or containers. Place them in full sun, in organically rich, well-drained soil. Space the plants 2 to 3 feet apart to promote good air circulation and reduce the risk of disease. Stake the plants to support the long stems and make harvesting easier. Water regularly, avoiding wetting the foliage to prevent fungal infections.
