Description

Spearmint ( Mentha spicata ), offered by the seed company WH Perron

Spearmint is the most popular variety of mint thanks to its fruity and sweet scented leaves. Versatile, it finds many uses in cooking, whether for desserts, drinks or savory dishes. A perennial and invasive plant, it spreads quickly by its creeping stems, while offering pretty purple flowers when mature.

Maturity: Perennial
Plant height: 30 to 60 cm
Spread: 40 cm
Formulation: Untreated
Latin name: Mentha spicata
Companion plants: Broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, pumpkin, squash, turnip, peas, radish, tomato
Enemy plants: Carrot, chamomile, cucumber, gherkin, corn

Cultivation method:

Sow spearmint seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost or directly into the ground after frost. Plant in well-drained, slightly moist soil in full sun or partial shade. Space plants 12 to 16 inches apart. Since mint is invasive, it is advisable to grow it in a pot or bury a barrier to limit its spread. Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture and harvest leaves as needed.

Add a touch of freshness to your dishes and drinks with spearmint, an easy-to-grow plant that’s a must-have in any culinary garden!
