Description

Cucumber 'Serpent Long' (Cucumis sativus), offered by Weston Seeds

The 'Serpent Long' cucumber is an heirloom variety renowned for its long, crisp fruits that are exceptionally digestible and free of bitterness. The fruits, which are slightly curved with very few seeds, can reach up to 40 cm (16 inches) in length, but offer better texture and flavor when harvested at 30 cm (12 inches). When grown on a trellis, this cucumber produces straighter, easier-to-harvest fruits.

Cultivation method:

'Serpent Long' cucumber thrives in sandy, loamy soil rich in compost or well-rotted manure. Wait until soil temperatures reach at least 18°C (66°F) before sowing, as cooler soils slow germination and increase the risk of rot.

Form mounds of soil about 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm) high and 12 to 24 inches (30 to 60 cm) in diameter. Space the mounds 4 feet (120 cm) apart. Plant 6 to 8 seeds per mound at a depth of 3/4 inch (2 cm). Once established, thin to 3 to 4 plants per mound. To maximize space, grow vigorous vines on a trellis, which also helps produce straighter fruit.

Maintain consistent soil moisture throughout the season, as fruits can become bitter if the plant experiences water stress from hot, dry weather. Harvest cucumbers by carefully cutting them from the vine with a sharp knife to avoid damaging the plant.
