The Columbine Flower / Aquilegia is an elegant and easy to grow perennial plant, appreciated for its finely cut leaves and delicate spurred flowers available in a wide variety of colours. It flowers quickly after sowing and offers a second bloom in summer if lightly pruned after the first.

Cultivation method:
For direct sowing, wait until all danger of frost has passed, then sow directly outdoors. Plants will flower within 6-8 weeks of sowing. For transplants, start seeds indoors in early April. . Press the seeds into the potting soil, but do not cover them, as they need light to germinate. Maintain a temperature of 20°C (70°F) and the seeds will germinate in 5 to 10 days.
Once the plants are well established, grow them under artificial light until transplanting outdoors in late May. Space the plants 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm) apart in well-drained soil. . Place them in full sun if summers are cool or in a partially shaded area if summer temperatures are higher. Prune plants lightly after the first bloom to encourage a second summer bloom.
