Cultivation method:
Sow seeds directly into the ground from mid-spring, once the soil is workable. Plant seeds 1/2 to 3/4 inch (1 to 2 cm) deep and space them 1 inch (2.5 cm) apart in rows 18 inches (45 cm) apart. For a continuous harvest, sow every two weeks until early summer.
Gradually thin the seedlings to 4 inches (10 cm) apart, using the small leaves as baby greens. Harvest by cutting the outer leaves off at the base of the stem, leaving the inner leaves for continued regrowth.
Swiss chard prefers well-drained soil with a pH of 6.5 to 7.5. Water regularly to maintain moisture, especially during dry spells, and harvest leaves regularly to encourage new shoots.
