To start the crop, sow seeds indoors in early spring. Place one seed per cell 2 cm (1 in) deep in seed starting mix. Water thoroughly, cover with a plastic bag or place the tray in a propagator to maintain a consistent temperature and humidity. Once the seeds have germinated, remove the covers and transplant the seedlings into 9 cm (3.5 in) pots when they are about 8 cm (3 in) tall and have three true leaves.

In late spring, gradually acclimate the plants to outdoor conditions by exposing them for increasing periods each day for two weeks. Transplant them into fertile, well-drained soil in full sun in early summer, spacing them 18 inches apart. Plant them deeply, burying the lowest leaves under the soil, and install sturdy supports, such as wire spirals or stakes, to support their growth.

Plant training:

Keep the main stem attached to its support during growth. Pinch out side shoots regularly to prevent excessive growth and focus energy on fruit production. In late summer or early fall, pinch out the main growing point to encourage the last fruits to ripen before the end of the season.

Harvest tomatoes when they are ripe by gently removing them from the vine. Protect the plants from frost by harvesting unripe fruit before the cold weather sets in. These can be brought indoors to finish ripening. Green tomatoes can also be made into chutney or used in homemade recipes.
