'Red Baron' onions thrive in full sun , in light, well-drained soil rich in organic matter . Sow directly in the ground in spring , as soon as the soil can be worked, or start seedlings indoors 8 to 10 weeks before transplanting . Plant seeds 1 cm deep , in rows 30 cm apart, then thin seedlings to 5 cm for a green onion crop, or 10 cm for mature bulbs. Moderate but regular watering is recommended to ensure uniform growth. Harvest green onions after 60 days or allow them to mature for 100-110 days for firm, well-formed red bulbs .
