Melon 'Oka' (Cucumis melo) – Offered by Ferme Tourne-Sol
The 'Oka' melon is a Quebec heritage variety , developed by a Trappist monk in Oka in the early 20th century. This early-ripening melon produces round fruits with a slightly embroidered light green rind , containing a sweet and fragrant orange flesh . Adapted to northern climates , it offers excellent productivity and a taste reminiscent of traditional cantaloupes with a finer and more delicate touch.
Type : Orange flesh melon
Plant habit : Creeping
Spread : 1 to 2 m
Plant height : 30 to 50 cm
Quantity per pack : 25 seeds
Maturity : About 80 to 90 days
Companion plants : Corn, basil, nasturtium, radish, sunflower
Enemy plants : Potato (risk of common diseases)
Cultivation method
The 'Oka' melon is grown in full sun , in rich, light, well-drained soil, amended with compost to encourage vigorous growth. Start seedlings indoors 3 to 4 weeks before the last frost , then transplant the young plants when the soil reaches 18°C and the risk of frost has passed. Sow directly in the open ground after the last frost if the season is long enough. Space the plants 80 cm to 1 m apart , as they need room to spread. Regular watering is essential to maintain soil moisture, but avoid watering the foliage to reduce disease. Mulch around the base of the plants helps retain moisture and warm the soil. Harvest when the melon gives off a sweet scent and the stalk attachment begins to crack .
Use and benefits
The 'Oka' melon is delicious fresh, in fruit salad, smoothies or with a squeeze of lime . Its sweet and juicy flavor makes it a perfect natural dessert for summer. It is also rich in vitamins A and C, antioxidants and water , thus contributing to hydration and strengthening the immune system.
Thanks to its early maturity, its adaptation to the Quebec climate and its exquisite taste , the 'Oka' melon is a treasure of horticultural heritage to be rediscovered and cultivated with pride.
