Cultivation method

The 'Gladstone' onion is grown in full sun , in rich, well-drained, slightly sandy soil. Sow directly in the open ground in spring , as soon as the soil has warmed, or start seedlings indoors 8 to 10 weeks before transplanting . Sow seeds 1 cm deep , in rows 30 cm apart, then thin the young plants to 10 cm once well established. Moderate but regular watering is necessary to avoid water stress and encourage the formation of nicely rounded bulbs. Harvest when the leaves turn yellow and begin to lie down , a sign that the bulbs are ripe. For optimal conservation, let them dry for a few days in the sun before storing them in a dry, cool place.

Use and benefits

The 'Gladstone' onion is perfect for fresh salads, stir-fries, soups and caramelizations . Its mild and sweet taste allows it to be enjoyed raw or cooked , without being too strong or too spicy. It is also excellent in pickles to preserve all its flavor. Rich in vitamins C and B6, antioxidants and minerals , it contributes to a healthy and balanced diet.

With its mild flavour, generous production and easy growing , the 'Gladstone' onion is an excellent choice for any vegetable garden.
