A Heritage Variety for Succulent Harvests
Pea 'Laxton's Progress. 9' (Pisum sativum), Offered by OSC Seeds
'Laxton's Progress. 9' peas are a hardy and productive heirloom variety introduced in the 1930s. These compact 45cm tall vines produce uniform 11cm pods each containing 8-10 large, dark green, sweet and tasty peas. Ideal for market stalls and allotments, this pea provides a bountiful and easy to pick crop. Perfect for fresh eating or freezing, these peas maintain their sweet taste and texture after harvest.
How to Grow:
Sow seeds directly in the garden from early April to mid-May, when soil temperatures are between 50 and 60°F (10 and 16°C). Choose a location in full sun with well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Space seeds 2.5 inches (6.5 cm) apart in double rows 10 inches (25 cm) apart, planting them 1/2 to 1 inch (1.25 to 2.5 cm) deep. Regular moisture is essential during germination, which takes about 15 days. For best yields, sow in successive waves every two weeks.
Support plants with trellises or netting to facilitate harvesting and ensure good air circulation. Once flowering begins, water regularly to encourage continued production. Pods mature quickly, so pick daily to maintain production and enjoy peak flavor.
Spread:
Plant height: 45 cm
Quantity per pack: Approximately 70 to 100 seeds (1-3 seeds/gram)
Companion plants: Lettuce, carrots, radishes
Enemy plants: Garlic, onions
Add a touch of tradition to your garden with the 'Laxton's Progress. 9' pea. Hardy and easy to grow, this variety guarantees a tasty harvest, perfect for your fresh meals or for winter reserves.
