A Rustic Mixture Suitable for Poor Soils
Seeds from the Native Seed Mix for Septic Beds , offered by the OSC seed company.
This native seed mix has been specially designed and tested for use on a septic bed . It includes a wide variety of wildflowers and perennial grasses , perfectly adapted to sandy and gravelly soils . This mix not only beautifies your space with a natural and lasting flowering , but also stabilizes the soil and limits erosion thanks to its deep root system.
Spread : Varies depending on species
Plant height : 30-100 cm
Companion plants : Native flowers and prairie grasses
Enemy plants : Invasive plants and aggressive non-native grasses
A mixture designed for biodiversity
This mix contains a selection of vibrantly coloured wildflowers and grasses adapted to dry and poor environments. Among them we find the black-eyed Susan , which brings touches of gold, the ash vervain , with delicate mauve flowers, or the flaming star of the marshes , with its slender shape and purple flowers.
Grasses play a key role in this mix. Lesser Bluestem , a perennial grass with changing hues, and non-invasive Perennial Ryegrass provide effective ground cover while protecting germinating seeds.
Cultivation method
Best results are obtained with autumn sowing , between October 15 and November 15. This period allows for natural stratification of the seeds , promoting optimal germination the following spring. Spring sowing in April can also be attempted, but some seeds may not germinate until the following year if stratification is insufficient.
Soil preparation
- Remove existing weeds by hand or using an organic herbicide.
- Loosen the soil surface by 2.5 cm with a rake or cultivator to improve rooting.
- Sow evenly by broadcasting the seeds. Mixing with dry sand helps to ensure even distribution.
- Let nature do the rest! Rain, snow and ground frost will help the seeds integrate naturally into the soil.
- For spring sowing , be sure to compact the soil well after sowing to ensure good contact between the seeds and the soil.
Maintenance and establishment period
Establishing a native ecosystem takes 3 to 4 years . During this period:
- Mow to 20 cm height twice the first year to limit invasive weeds.
- Cut one last time at the beginning of the second season if necessary.
- Manually remove pockets of aggressive weeds.
Use and special features
Perennial ryegrass , included in the mixture, acts as a valuable food crop . It allows:
- Limit soil erosion caused by wind and rain.
- Protect native seeds by reducing competition with weeds.
- Provide temporary shelter to encourage establishment of slower growing species.
This mix is ideal for stabilizing fragile soils, creating habitat for local wildlife and beautifying difficult-to-cultivate spaces . It is a perfect choice for those who want a natural and resilient garden , while supporting local biodiversity!
