Basil 'Genovese', from the seed company Hortinova, is a traditional Italian variety known for its large, glossy green leaves and its intense, slightly aniseed flavor.
Originally from Genoa, this basil is a must for preparing pesto and for enhancing a multitude of dishes. Easy to grow, it is suitable for both the garden and pots. The natural, untreated and GMO-free seeds guarantee environmentally friendly cultivation.
Spread: 20 to 30 cm
Plant height: 30 to 50 cm
Companion plants: Tomato, pepper, onion
Enemy plants: Rue
Latin name: Ocimum basilicum
To grow 'Genovese' basil, sow seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost, or directly outdoors after all danger of frost. Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep in well-drained potting soil and maintain a temperature of 70 to 85 degrees F (21 to 29 degrees C) for rapid germination in 7 to 14 days. Transplant seedlings into pots or directly into the garden, spacing them 8 to 12 inches apart.
This herbaceous plant prefers full sun exposure and soil rich in organic matter. Water regularly to keep the soil slightly moist, but avoid overwatering which could encourage the development of diseases. Pinch the ends of the stems regularly to encourage branching and delay the flowering, in order to prolong the harvest of tasty leaves.
Harvest the leaves as needed, picking the youngest ones to enjoy their intense flavor. 'Genovese' basil is perfect for flavoring salads, sauces, Italian dishes and, of course, for making authentic pesto. If you let a few plants flower, they will attract pollinators to your garden while producing seeds for future cultivation.
