Broccoli Rapini 'Senza Testa'(Brassica oleracea), offered by the seed company Weston Seeds

'Greens Without Heads' broccoli is a unique variety grown for its tender, flavorful leaves, without the head production. These leafy shoots offer a rich texture and delicious flavor, similar to broccoli rabe but without the florets. This plant is ideal for steaming, braising or sautéing. The flavor of its tender leaves intensifies after a light frost, making it an excellent fall or winter crop.

For spring growing, start seeds indoors in a soilless mix in late March to early April. Transplant seedlings outdoors in late April to early May, spacing them 18" (45 cm) apart in rows 3' (90 cm) apart. For fall or winter harvest, direct sow in late summer when temperatures begin to drop.

Water regularly to maintain even moisture and fertilize with a balanced fertilizer to encourage healthy growth. Leaves are ready to harvest when they reach 10 to 12 inches (25 to 30 cm) long, providing an excellent yield of nutritious greens.
