Did you know?

Fava beans are among the oldest legumes cultivated by man , dating back over 8,000 years! Rich in protein, fiber, and iron , they are a staple in many cuisines, especially in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe .

Spread : Upright, compact growth
Plant height : 90 to 120 cm
Quantity per pack : ± 30 seeds
Companion plants : Corn, carrot, cabbage, cucumber, peas, radish, potato, squash, nasturtium, rosemary
Enemy plants : Alliums (onions, garlic, leek), beetroot

Cultivation method

Before sowing, it is advisable to soak the seeds in warm water for a maximum of 8 hours to improve germination. Sow directly in open ground as soon as the soil is workable in spring , because the bean tolerates cold well and can be planted very early .

'Windsor' bean prefers well- drained soil with a little organic matter . Space plants 15 cm apart and rows 25 cm apart to ensure good air circulation and reduce disease. Moderate watering is recommended, especially during flowering and pod formation.

To prolong the harvest, it is possible to carry out successive sowings every three weeks . This variety reaches maturity in 75 to 85 days and continues to produce as long as temperatures remain cool.

Harvesting and conservation

Pods can be harvested young , when the beans are still tender and sweet, or left to mature for a dry bean harvest . Regular picking is recommended to encourage production.

Fresh beans will keep for a few days in the refrigerator , while dried beans should be stored in a dry, airtight place . To extend their shelf life, it is recommended to freeze them after blanching .

With its impressive hardiness , generous harvest and excellent nutritional value , the 'Windsor' bean is an essential crop for lovers of old and tasty vegetables!
