Description

Organic 'Italian Gold' tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) from the seed company Gaia, a golden and tasty Italian variety

The 'Italian Gold' tomato is an Italian heirloom variety known for its bright golden colour and plump flesh that is perfect for sauces. Producing large 150g (6oz) fruits , it is ideal raw in salads or cooked in coulis or sauces . In addition to its prolific yield , this tomato is prized for its balanced sweetness and firm texture , making it a great alternative to traditional red tomatoes.

Did you know?

Yellow tomatoes, such as the 'Italian Gold', are naturally less acidic than red tomatoes. This makes them more digestible , especially for those who suffer from gastric sensitivities , while providing a nice richness in beta-carotene, a powerful antioxidant beneficial for the skin and vision.

Spread: vigorous growth and airy habit
Plant height: 150 to 200 cm
Quantity per pack: ± 20 seeds
Companion plants: basil, parsley, carrot, asparagus, alliums, celery, borage, marigold, calendula, mint, sage, peppers, dill (until maturity)
Enemy plants: potato, corn, kohlrabi, beetroot, fennel, peas, squash

Cultivation method

Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before planting out, then transplant to open ground after the last frost , when night temperatures are above 12°C . Plant 3-6 mm (1/8-1/4") deep , spacing plants 60-90 cm (24-36") apart and rows 120-180 cm (4-6') apart. This indeterminate variety requires strong staking , as it produces a large quantity of fruit in season.

Harvesting and storage

Harvest tomatoes when they are a uniform golden yellow and slightly soft to the touch. For best flavor , allow them to ripen on the vine as much as possible or harvest them slightly green to ripen off the vine at 72°F (22°C).

Store tomatoes at room temperature , in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight. For best storage, place them in a cool place (12-21°C) with a relative humidity of 95% . Avoid refrigerating them, as this alters their texture and taste.

Long-term preservation methods

Freezing: Cut into quarters or freeze whole for use in sauces and soups
Drying: Slice them and let them dehydrate slowly to obtain dried tomatoes full of flavor.
Preserve: Prepare a homemade golden sauce, ideal for pasta, pizzas and stews

With its vibrant color, delicate taste and versatility in the kitchen, the 'Italian Gold' tomato is a tasty alternative to red varieties and a must-have in the vegetable garden!
