Description

Organic 'Gezahnte' tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) from the seed company Gaia, a unique variety and ideal for stuffing

The 'Gezahnte' tomato is a mid-season heirloom variety that stands out for its wrinkled appearance and semi-hollow texture , perfect for stuffing. Producing 280-340g (10-12oz) fruits, it develops a beautiful red hue when ripe and performs very well in hot, dry conditions . Versatile, it is also ideal for preparing sauces and preserves thanks to its tasty, not very juicy flesh.

Did you know?

The name Gezahnte , of German origin, means "serrated" or "crenellated" , in reference to its pleated and original shape . This type of tomato has been appreciated for centuries for its ability to retain fillings when stuffed, in addition to offering a dense flesh perfect for cooking.

Spread: vigorous growth and abundant foliage
Plant height: 150 to 200 cm
Quantity per pack: ± 20 seeds
Companion plants: basil, parsley, carrot, asparagus, alliums, celery, borage, marigold, calendula, mint, sage, peppers, dill (until maturity)
Enemy plants: potato, corn, kohlrabi, beetroot, fennel, peas, squash

Cultivation method

Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before planting out, then transplant to open ground after the last frost , when night temperatures are above 12°C . Plant 3-6 mm (1/8-1/4") deep , spacing plants 60-90 cm (24-36") apart and rows 120-180 cm (4-6') apart. This indeterminate variety requires sturdy staking , as its large, heavy fruit can weigh down branches.

Harvesting and storage

Harvest tomatoes when they reach a nice, even red color and are slightly soft to the touch. For best flavor , let them ripen on the vine, or harvest them slightly green to ripen off the vine at 72°F (22°C).

Store tomatoes at room temperature , in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight. For best storage, place them in a cool place (12-21°C) with a relative humidity of 95% . Avoid the refrigerator, as this alters their texture and taste.

Long-term preservation methods

Freezing: Cut into pieces or freeze whole for use in sauces and stuffings
Drying: Slice them thinly and let them dehydrate slowly for tasty sun-dried tomatoes
Preserve: Make homemade tomato sauce or peeled tomatoes to prolong their flavor all year long

With its unique shape, its semi-hollow texture perfect for stuffing and its excellent adaptation to hot climates, the 'Gezahnte' Tomato is an essential choice for lovers of cooking and original tomatoes!
