Description

Organic black cherry tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) from the seed company Gaia, a small tomato with an intense and sweet taste

The Black Cherry Tomato is a heritage variety notable for its beautiful reddish-brown color with purple highlights and its sweet, slightly smoky taste . Its juicy flesh, rich in aromas, makes it a must-have for salads, snacks and appetizer platters . Very productive, it grows in long clusters on indeterminate plants, ensuring an abundant harvest throughout the season.

Did you know?

Dark-colored tomatoes, like black cherry, are rich in anthocyanins and lycopene , powerful antioxidants that help protect cells from aging , maintain cardiovascular health , and strengthen the immune system . Their concentration of natural sugars gives them a deeper, more complex flavor than classic red tomatoes.

Spread: vigorous growth and climbing habit
Plant height: 150 to 200 cm
Quantity per pack: ± 20 seeds
Companion plants: basil, parsley, carrot, asparagus, alliums, celery, borage, marigold, calendula, mint, sage, peppers, dill (until maturity)
Enemy plants: potato, corn, kohlrabi, beetroot, fennel, peas, squash

Cultivation method

Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before planting out, then transplant to open ground after the last frost , when night temperatures are above 12°C . Plant 3-6 mm (1/8-1/4") deep , spacing plants 60-90 cm (24-36") apart and rows 120-180 cm (4-6') . This indeterminate variety requires strong staking , as it produces numerous clusters of small tomatoes throughout the season.

Harvesting and storage

Harvest tomatoes when they reach a nice, even reddish-brown color and are slightly firm to the touch. For best flavor , let them ripen on the vine or harvest them slightly green to ripen off the vine at 72°F (22°C).

Store tomatoes at room temperature , in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight. For best storage, place them in a cool place (12-21°C) with a relative humidity of 95% . Avoid the refrigerator, as this alters their texture and taste.

Long-term preservation methods

Freezing: Freeze them whole or cut in half for future use in sauces or salads
Drying: Cut them in half and let them dehydrate to obtain dried cherry tomatoes with an intense flavor.
Preserve: make cherry tomato jam or a tangy sauce to accompany cheeses

With its unique color, sweet taste and high productivity, the Black Cherry Tomato is an essential variety for all lovers of gourmet and original tomatoes!
