Description

Organic 'Cherokee Chocolate' tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) from the seed company Gaia, an old variety with an intense flavor

The 'Cherokee Chocolate' tomato is an heirloom variety descended from the famous Cherokee Purple , but with a natural mutation that gives it darker skin and denser flesh . Its 280-450 g (10-16 oz) fruits are a beautiful orange-brown hue that matures to a deep brownish-red . This tomato is known for its juicy flesh, rich, sweet flavor , with slightly smoky notes. Its melting, meaty texture makes it an excellent choice for salads, gourmet sandwiches and homemade sauces

Did you know?

Dark-colored tomatoes, like 'Cherokee Chocolate,' are rich in anthocyanins and lycopene , natural antioxidants that help protect cells from oxidative stress , maintain heart health , and strengthen the immune system . Plus, their concentration of natural sugars gives them a deeper, more complex flavor than traditional red tomatoes

Spread: vigorous growth and sprawling habit
Plant height: 180 to 250 cm
Quantity per pack: ± 20 seeds
Companion plants: basil, parsley, carrot, asparagus, alliums, celery, borage, marigold, calendula, mint, sage, peppers, dill (until maturity)
Enemy plants: potato, corn, kohlrabi, beetroot, fennel, peas, squash

Cultivation method

Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before planting out, then transplant to open ground after the last frost , when night temperatures are above 12°C . Plant 3-6 mm (1/8-1/4") deep , spacing plants 60-90 cm (24-36") apart and rows 120-180 cm (4-6') apart. This indeterminate variety has a sprawling growth habit, requiring sturdy staking or a sturdy cage to support its heavy fruits.

Harvesting and storage

Harvest tomatoes when they reach a rich, uniform red-brown color and are slightly soft to the touch. For best flavor , allow them to ripen on the vine, or harvest them slightly green to ripen off the vine at 72°F (22°C).

Store tomatoes at room temperature , in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight. For best storage, place them in a cool place (12-21°C) with a relative humidity of 95% . Avoid the refrigerator, as this alters their texture and taste.

Long-term preservation methods

Freezing: Cut them into quarters or freeze them whole for future use in sauces and soups
Drying: Slice them and let them dehydrate slowly to obtain dried tomatoes rich in flavor.
Preserve: Make an intense and velvety tomato sauce, perfect for pasta and stews

With its deep taste, melting texture and unique color, the 'Cherokee Chocolate' Tomato is an exceptional variety for lovers of authentic flavors and heritage tomatoes!
