The 'Chiba' soybean is an early and productive variety , prized for its mild and sweet flavor and its smooth and creamy flesh . Originally from Japan, this variety is specially selected for the production of edamame , these young soybeans that are tender, rich in protein and enjoyed as a snack or side dish. Adapted to temperate climates, it is easy to grow , resistant and offers a generous harvest, ideal for family vegetable gardens and organic crops.
Did you know?
Soybeans have been cultivated in Asia for over 5,000 years and are one of the most complete sources of plant-based protein. In Japan, edamame , eaten with a touch of salt, is a staple of traditional appetizers and meals. In addition to its taste qualities, soybeans naturally enrich the soil with nitrogen , thus promoting the fertility of surrounding crops.

Cultivation method
Sow directly into the open ground after all risk of frost , when soil temperatures are at least 15°C . Sow 2.5 to 5 cm (1-2") deep , spacing plants 10 to 15 cm (4-6") apart and rows 30 to 75 cm (12-30") apart .
For a staggered harvest, plant every three weeks until mid-summer. Ensure good air circulation between plants to facilitate drying of the beans at the end of the season. Soybeans appreciate well-drained soil, rich in organic matter , and require regular watering to ensure optimal growth.
Harvesting and storage
Harvest the pods when their seeds are well formed but still tender , usually 75 to 80 days after sowing . For edamame, pick the pods before they start to turn yellow.
Storage:
- Fresh beans: Store pods in the refrigerator for up to a week
- Freezing: Blanch shelled or podded beans before freezing them for several months of storage.
- Dried beans: Allow pods to ripen on the plant, harvest when brown, then air dry before shelling
