Description

Organic rue (Ruta graveolens) from the seed company Gaia, an ornamental and repellent plant with ancient uses

Rue is a perennial plant once commonly grown in gardens for its medicinal properties and natural repellent effect against many insects and animals, including cats and Japanese beetles. Its finely cut, blue-green foliage and small yellow summer flowers give it a rustic elegance. Although its medicinal use has declined over time due to its potential toxicity , it remains a popular companion plant , particularly for keeping certain pests away from the vegetable garden.

Spread : 30 to 60 cm
Plant height : 60 to 90 cm
Quantity per pack : ± 100 seeds
Companion plants : onion, rose, lavender, strawberry, raspberry
Enemy plants : basil, sage, cabbage, cucumber, mint

Did you know?

In the past, rue was planted on the outskirts of villages to keep away stray cats and dogs , due to its strong odor and potentially irritating sap . Its foliage, although decorative, contains phototoxic substances that can cause skin reactions when in contact with the skin, particularly in the sun.

⚠️ Be careful!

Contact with rue sap can cause irritation , itching , and in some cases, blisters similar to burns . Wear gloves and wash your hands thoroughly after handling. It is best to avoid planting this herb in areas accessible to young children and pets.

Cultivation method

Seed stratification is necessary for 2-4 weeks . Sow directly into the ground in spring when soil temperatures are above 15°C , or start indoors 6-7 weeks before transplanting . Seeds need light to germinate and may take up to 4 weeks to emerge. Plant in well-drained soil and full sun for best growth.

Harvesting and storage

Harvest rue stems when they are fully developed, usually in summer . For use in herbal medicine or as a repellent , hang the stems in a dark, dry place until they become brittle , then store in an airtight jar .

With its unique appearance , its natural repellent role and its fascinating history , Rue is a plant that is as useful as it is ornamental in the garden!
