The Jamaican Burr pickle , also called the West Indian burr pickle , is an heirloom variety native to West Africa , introduced to Jamaica in the 16th century. Recognizable by its small, 2-5 cm green fruits , covered with soft, thorn-like bumps , it offers a tangy, sweet flavor , perfect for marinades, stews and stir-fries .
Very vigorous and productive , it forms vines that can reach 2.5 m , which makes it an excellent variety for training to optimize space in the garden.

Cultivation method
Seeds should be soaked in warm water for 24 hours and scarified to improve germination.
Sowing is done directly in the open ground 1 to 2 weeks after the last frost , or indoors 4 weeks before planting for an earlier harvest. Jamaican Burr gherkin prefers rich, well-drained soil and full sun exposure .
It is recommended to grow it on a trellis , which facilitates air circulation , protects the fruits from diseases and improves the harvest .
Harvesting and conservation
The fruits should be harvested young when their skin is still green for a sweet and crisp flavor. If left on the vine, they turn yellow and take on a more pronounced flavor , ideal for cooked dishes.
Fresh pickles will keep in the refrigerator for 7 to 10 days , but can also be brined or pickled for longer storage .
