Did you know?

Monarch butterflies depend on milkweed for their life cycle. In addition to serving as the exclusive food source for their caterpillars , these plants contain toxic substances that make monarchs unappetizing to their predators . This mix includes butterfly weed , a variety favored by monarchs for its bright blooms and abundant nectar.

This mix also includes nectar-rich plants that extend the monarchs' feeding season:

  • Rudbeckia hirsuti – resistant and bright
  • Cosmos and Zinnias – prolonged flowering and high attractiveness
  • Godetia and New England Aster – vibrant color and nectar richness
  • Scabiosa and Purple Coneflower – perfect for natural gardens
  • Wallflower and Sweet Alyssum – excellent for attracting pollinating insects

Cultivation method

This mixture is easy to grow and is suitable for flower meadows, borders, flower beds and wild gardens . To maximize its effectiveness, it is recommended to prepare the soil by weeding it to eliminate any unwanted competition. A well-loosened soil will promote the germination and growth of young plants.

Seeds should be spread evenly over the surface without being buried too much, as some require light to germinate. It is advisable to rake lightly after sowing to ensure good contact with the soil. Watering is essential at the beginning to maintain sufficient moisture until emergence, which usually occurs between 15 and 28 days after sowing .

Sowing can be done in spring or autumn , depending on the desired effect.

  • In spring or early summer , for immediate flowering from the first season.
  • In the fall , by cold sowing, when the soil temperature is below 4.4°C . This method allows the seeds to sleep during the winter and germinate naturally the following spring, thus producing more robust plants better adapted to their environment .

Plants should be spaced approximately 7cm apart, with 90cm between rows to allow for good distribution and avoid competition between different varieties.

Harvest and maintenance

Once well established, these flowers require little maintenance and are adapted to natural conditions . To prolong flowering, it is advisable to regularly remove faded flowers . Some varieties reseed spontaneously , allowing a natural renewal of the garden each year .

Watering can be reduced once plants have reached maturity, as most are drought tolerant . However, in cases of prolonged high heat, occasional watering may be beneficial to maintain abundant flowering .
