Description

Organic Luffa Gourd from the seed company Gaia, a versatile squash for cooking and exfoliation

Luffa gourd ( Lagenaria siceraria ), also called sponge gourd , is a spectacular climbing plant, cultivated both for its edible fruits and for its transformation into natural sponges . In Asian cuisine, its young tender fruits are prized for their delicate texture and subtle flavor , perfect in stir-fries, curries or stews.

If the fruits are allowed to ripen on the vine , they are transformed into natural fibers , offering an ecological and sustainable alternative to synthetic sponges. Easy to grow , this plant requires good staking to support its vigorous growth and allow the gourds to hang freely , thus promoting their optimal development.

Did you know?

Contrary to what one might think, loofah sponges do not come from the sea , but from this variety of squash! Used for centuries in body care and household cleaning , loofah fiber is biodegradable, antibacterial and naturally exfoliating .

In some cultures, luffa is also valued for its medicinal properties , particularly for relieving coughs and purifying the body .

Cultivation method

Luffa needs warmth and time to mature. Start seeds indoors 5 to 6 weeks before the last frost to give them a head start. To encourage quick germination , soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours , then lightly scarify their tough coverings before planting.

Transplant seedlings once night temperatures are above 15°C and provide ample space , as this plant climbs and spreads quickly . A sturdy trellis or pergola is ideal to support its growth.

Luffa prefers rich, well-drained soil in full sun . Water regularly to maintain vigorous growth, but avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.

Harvesting and processing

For cooking : Harvest young fruits when they are about 6 to 8 inches long . At this stage, their flesh is still tender and flavorful. Frequent picking encourages continued production .

To make sponges : Allow the gourds to fully ripen on the vine until their skins turn from green to yellow-brown and they become light to the touch. Harvest them before the first frost to prevent them from rotting.

Process of transformation into natural sponge :

  1. Soak the gourd in water to soften its skin.
  2. Remove the outer shell and rinse well to remove the pulp.
  3. Let dry completely in the sun , then shake to remove the seeds .
  4. Cut according to your needs and use your loofah as an exfoliating sponge or an eco-friendly dishwashing sponge .
