Cultivation method
Iceberg lettuce grows easily in rich, moist, well-drained soil . It prefers sunny or partially shaded exposure and tolerates cool temperatures .
Direct seeding can be done as soon as the soil can be worked , in spring or late summer for a fall harvest . For an early start, seeds can be started indoors 3 to 4 weeks before planting. Sow seeds 1/4 to 1/2" deep, spacing plants 6" apart and rows 24" apart.
Watering should be regular but moderate to avoid water stress and promote the formation of dense heads . Mulching can be beneficial to maintain moisture and limit weed growth .
Harvesting and conservation
Iceberg lettuce is harvested when the heads are well formed and firm , usually after 55 days of cultivation . For optimum freshness , cut the lettuce at the base and store in the refrigerator in a perforated bag at 1-2°C .
