Cultivation method
'Fine Cut' lettuce is easy to grow and adapts well to both spring crops and fall plantings. It prefers a fresh, light and well-drained soil , with a sunny to partially shaded exposure .
Direct seeding in open ground is recommended as soon as the soil can be worked. For an early harvest, seed can be started indoors 3-4 weeks before planting. Seeds should be sown 1/4-1/2" deep , spacing plants 6" apart and rows 12-18" apart.
Regular watering is essential to prevent premature seeding, especially during hot weather. Mulching can be used to conserve moisture and limit weed competition.
Harvesting and conservation
Harvesting can begin when the leaves reach a sufficient size, approximately 40 to 60 days after sowing . For continued production, it is advisable to harvest the outer leaves , thus allowing the plant to continue its growth.
Once harvested, lettuce will keep for up to 3 days in the refrigerator in a perforated plastic bag. For optimal freshness, wash and spin dry the leaves before storing.
With its fast growth, flavorful foliage and tolerance of cool temperatures , 'Fine Cut' lettuce is ideal for any gardener wanting tender, delicious salad production all season long.
