Cultivation method
Seeds can be soaked in warm water for 12 hours before sowing to optimize germination.
Sowing can be done directly in open ground as soon as the soil is workable , or started indoors 4 weeks before planting . For an autumn harvest, sow 2 months before the first frost .
Plant in well-drained soil, rich in organic matter , spacing plants 5 to 45 cm apart depending on the desired size. Moderate watering is recommended to prevent disease while ensuring good growth.
Harvesting and conservation
Harvest at desired size , cutting off the outer leaves first. Young leaves are tender and perfect for salads, while mature leaves are tougher but excellent sautéed or in soup.
After harvesting, it is advisable to cool them in water to prolong their freshness. Keeps for a few weeks in the refrigerator .
