Cultivation method

Hibiscus prefers fertile, well-drained, slightly acidic soil , with full sun exposure. A good supply of compost or organic matter at planting time promotes vigorous growth and abundant flowering.

Seeds should be started indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost . Unlike other perennials, they do not need stratification . Sow them 1/4 to 1/2" deep , in moist, warm ( 70-75°F ) potting soil.

When the plants reach 10 to 15 cm , transplant them outdoors after the last frosts. Space them 1 to 2 meters apart to allow them to develop properly. Mulching is recommended to retain soil moisture and protect the roots from the cold.

Hibiscus requires regular watering , especially in dry periods. Prune lightly after flowering to stimulate new growth and maintain a compact shape.

Harvesting and conservation

Hibiscus flowers are harvested when they are fully open , usually in summer or autumn. For infusions, pick the calyxes , dry them in the shade in a well-ventilated place, then store them in an airtight container.

Adding an exotic, medicinal and gourmet touch to your garden, hibiscus is a plant that is both decorative and useful , which appeals to lovers of beautiful flowers as well as enthusiasts of beneficial plants.
