The 'Tongue of Fire' dwarf bean , also known as the Borlotto bean , is an heirloom variety native to Tierra del Fuego , in the southernmost part of South America. It is distinguished by its spectacular pods , decorated with pinkish-red patterns on a cream background, and by its large beans with a particularly creamy texture when cooked. Very versatile, it can be eaten fresh as a green bean or dried for soups and stews .

This bushy dwarf bean does not require staking, making it ideal for growing in a vegetable garden, container or urban garden . Easy to maintain, it adapts well to temperate climates and produces a good harvest in just a few months .

Did you know?

Speckled beans like Tongue of Fire are prized in cooking for their ability to absorb the flavors of the dishes they simmer in. In Italy, Borlotti are a staple base for minestrones and rustic dishes , providing both richness and creaminess.

Spread : Bushy habit, no need for support
Plant height : 40 to 50 cm
Quantity per pack : ± 40 seeds

Cultivation method

Before sowing, it is advisable to soak the seeds in warm water for up to 8 hours to stimulate germination. Longer soaking may weaken the seeds. Sow directly in open ground after the last frosts, when the soil is sufficiently warm.

'Tongue of Fire' beans prefer light, well-drained soil , with full sun exposure to ensure vigorous growth. Plant spacing of 3 to 4 inches (8 to 10 cm) between plants and 12 inches (30 cm) between rows is recommended to allow for good aeration and reduce the risk of disease. Watering should be moderate , as excess moisture can cause root rot.

To extend the harvest, it is possible to stagger sowing every three weeks . This bean reaches maturity after 65 to 70 days , thus offering a rapid and generous production.

Harvesting and conservation

The pods can be harvested young to be eaten as green beans , or left to mature for a dry bean harvest. For optimal preservation of dried beans, it is best to let them dry on the vine before harvesting. Once harvested, they should be stored in a dry, well-ventilated area .

To prevent insect infestation during storage, it is recommended to freeze dried beans for 3 days before storing them in airtight jars.

With its flamboyant color , delicate taste and ease of cultivation , the 'Tongue of Fire' bean is a must-have for lovers of old varieties and tasty dishes! 🌱
