Cultivation method

Before sowing, it is advisable to soak the seeds in warm water for a maximum of 8 hours to promote rapid and uniform germination. Once ready, they should be sown directly in the open ground , after the last frosts, when the soil is well warmed.

Malawi Black Bean Mix prefers a light, well-drained soil rich in organic matter . It needs full sun exposure and moderate but regular watering , especially during flowering and pod development. A spacing of 8 to 10 cm between plants and 60 cm between rows is recommended to ensure good air circulation and prevent the appearance of diseases.

This variety takes 70 to 90 days to mature. To extend the harvest and maximize production, successive sowings can be carried out every three weeks .

Harvesting and conservation

The pods should be harvested when they are well developed and beginning to dry naturally on the plant . To obtain quality dried beans , it is best to allow the pods to fully mature on the vine before harvesting.

Once dried, beans should be stored in a cool, dry place . To avoid any risk of insect infestation, it is recommended to freeze them for 3 days before storing them in airtight jars.

With its high nutritional value , easy cultivation , and cultural significance , Malawi Black Bean Mix is a go-to choice for gardeners looking for a flavorful, heirloom legume ! 🌱
