Cultivation method

Green-fleshed honeydew melon requires warmth and sun , as well as well-drained, fertile soil to produce sweet, fragrant fruit .

  • Soak the seeds in warm water for 12 to 24 hours before sowing, and lightly scarify the hull to improve germination.
  • Sow directly in open ground 1 to 2 weeks after the last frost , when the soil temperature reaches 23°C .
  • Or start indoors 4 weeks before planting date , to speed up harvest.
  • Sow 1cm (1/2") deep , spacing plants 60-90cm (24-36") apart and rows 150cm (60") apart.
  • Mulch the soil to retain moisture and prevent the fruit from directly touching the soil.
  • Regular but moderate watering , and reduction of watering at maturity to intensify the sweet flavor of the fruit.

Harvesting and conservation

  • Harvest when the skin turns pale yellow and the fruit gives off a sweet, slightly floral scent .
  • Unlike other melons, it continues to ripen after harvest , developing even more flavor.
  • Keeps for up to 4 weeks in the cold , ideal for prolonged consumption in summer .
  • Avoid refrigerating for too long , which alters its crisp texture.

Ideas for use in the kitchen

  • Serve it very cold , in slices, to fully savor its natural sweetness.
  • Add it to fruit salads , where it adds a sweet and crunchy touch.
  • Blend it into a smoothie with yogurt and mint for a refreshing drink.
  • Turn it into a granita or sorbet , perfect for hot summer days.
  • Pair it with raw ham or mild cheese for a delicious sweet-savory contrast.

With its melting and sweet flesh, its long conservation and its high productivity , the green-fleshed honeydew melon is an excellent choice for lovers of fresh and thirst-quenching fruits !
