Description

Organic flax from the Gaia seed company, a delicate bloom and a precious source of seeds

Organic flax ( Linum usitatissimum ) is a versatile and elegant plant , grown as much for its omega-3-rich seeds as for its bright sky-blue flowers . Throughout the summer, its delicate flowers add a poetic touch to the garden , while its thin stems produce a bountiful harvest of seeds with multiple benefits .

In addition to being a refined ornamental plant , flax is an ancient crop, highly valued for its textile fibers and nutritional virtues . Easy to grow, it adapts to well-drained and sandy soils , and requires little maintenance while offering a generous yield .

Did you know?

Flax is one of the oldest crops domesticated by humans . Used for over 6,000 years , it was used to produce strong fabrics, edible and medicinal oils . Even today, its seeds are prized for their benefits on digestion and cardiovascular health , thanks to their high fiber and essential fatty acid content .

In gardening, flax is also an excellent companion for certain crops , because it helps to structure the soil and attracts pollinating insects .

Spread: Slender and flexible port
Plant height: 60 to 80 cm
Quantity per pack: ± 200 seeds

Cultivation method

Flax is sown directly into the open ground in early spring , as soon as the soil can be worked. It is also possible to sow it in late summer or early autumn in temperate climates.

Sow seeds 1 to 1.5 cm deep , spacing plants 6 to 8 cm apart and maintaining 12 to 14 cm between rows . Although indoor sowing is possible , flax does not tolerate transplanting well due to its delicate root system. If necessary, use larger pots to avoid stress when transplanting .

Flax prefers well-drained, light, sandy soils . It tolerates drought well once established, but moderate watering will promote balanced growth and prolonged flowering . To encourage a denser, more branched plant , pinch back young shoots when they reach 6 inches (15 cm) in height .

Harvesting and storage

Flaxseed harvesting begins when the pods turn brown and begin to dry . Here are the steps for efficient harvesting :

  1. Cut the stems at the base when the capsules are fully ripe.
  2. Hang the linen bundles in a ventilated, dry place for several weeks.
  3. Crush the dried pods by placing them in a cloth bag (e.g. a pillowcase) and rolling a rolling pin over them.
  4. Separate the seeds from the residue using wind or a fan.

Well-dried seeds can be stored for several months in an airtight container, away from light and humidity.
