Description

Organic Malabar Spinach with large round leaves ( Basella alba ) – offered by Gaia, an edible vine ideal for summer

Malabar spinach is a tropical climbing plant , perfect for gardeners looking for a heat-tolerant leafy vegetable . Unlike traditional spinach which bolts quickly in hot weather, this variety thrives in summer and tolerates humidity well.

Its large, dark green, smooth, glossy leaves have a succulent texture and a mild, slightly peppery flavor . They are rich in vitamins A and C , and can be eaten raw in salads or cooked in stir-fries, soups, and curries , where they retain their firmness. With its vigorous growth and climbing habit , this spinach is ideal for vertical gardening , requiring a trellis or sturdy support .

Did you know?

Malabar spinach is often used in Ayurvedic medicine for its digestive and antioxidant properties . In Asia, it is grown as a staple vegetable and added to spicy dishes to balance the flavors.

Spread : Climbing plant requiring support
Plant height : Up to 1.80 m
Quantity per pack : ± 50 seeds
Companion plants : Dwarf beans, lettuce, parsley, shallots, nasturtium, radishes, carrots, asparagus, brassicas, eggplant, leeks, peas, strawberries

Cultivation method

Before sowing, scarify the seeds (lightly scratch the shell with sandpaper or soak them in lukewarm water for 24 hours) to speed up germination.

Sow indoors 8-10 weeks before last frost , then transplant when outdoor temperatures remain above 70°F . Place seedlings near a trellis or support , as this plant climbs quickly and can reach over 6 feet tall in good conditions.

Malabar spinach prefers well-drained, slightly moist soil and sunny to partial shade exposure . Moderate watering is recommended, especially during dry spells.

Harvesting and conservation

Harvesting can begin as soon as the leaves are large enough, picking them as needed to encourage continued growth. The more you harvest, the more the plant produces!

Fresh leaves will keep for a few days in the refrigerator , but can also be dried or blanched and frozen for later use.

With its heat resistance , fast growth and tasty leaves , Malabar spinach is a must-have for a productive vegetable garden even in the height of summer.
